Originally known as a farming community that supported Denver and nearby mining communities, Wheat Ridge was established in 1859. Wheat Ridge was the largest producer of carnations worldwide until the mid-20th century. The city was incorporated in 1969 when annexation by surrounding communities threatened to change this historic area. The city currently has three National Historical Sites and one Colorado State Historical Site. Actively working to preserve its western heritage, the Wheat Ridge Historical Society in cooperation with the Colorado Historical Society and the City of Wheat Ridge, has restored one of the first log cabins still standing on its' original site.
Located in Jefferson County, this city is served by Interstate highway I-70, as it curves toward the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Weat Ridge is considered primarily a residential community due to its close proximity to Denver. The city hosts five retail centers, several unique small industries, more than 20 parks, numerous trails and bike paths, and public open space areas.
