The city of Longmont was originally called Chicago-Colorado Colony, as it was founded by a group of Chicagoans in 1871, and later renamed to Longmont. In 1960 the government build an air traffic control center and IBM built a large plant located just southwest of the city limits. Since that time many other large IT companies, such as Seagate and Maxtor have come to call Longmont home.
