Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden. This is the sign you see as you enter Golden. Golden was first settled in 1859 and was the capital of the Territory of Colorado from 1862 to 1867. Golden is proud of its mining heritage and rich history. This is very evident as you stroll through the historical downtown area. Many of the old buildings have been saved and a walk down the street is like turning back a page in time. There are numerous art galleries, quaint shops, restaurants, and coffee shops to be enjoyed.
No visit to Golden would be complete without a trip up Lookout Mountain and a visit to the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum and Grave. The drive up the Lookout Mountain is not for the faint of heart. Several hairpin turns, narrow roads and spectacular views of Golden and Denver will take your breath away. At night the city looks like a billion twinkling stars.
Golden is proud to be home to the Coors Brewing Company. It has been said that Coors gets its' water from the water of a natural spring fed by the Clear Creek. Coors offers tours of the brewery daily.
Golden is also home to the Colorado School of Mines. This is one of the most highly rated engineering universities in the country. The Colorado School of Mines specializes in the geosciences.
Golden is known for its' outdoor recreation opportunities. Anything from horse back riding in White Ranch Park, to hiking or biking the Clear Creek Trail, to a relaxing afternoon at one of Golden's beautiful parks, to a day of golf at Fossil Trail Golf Course can be yours in Golden. Golden is also known for some of the best mountain biking in the world. Apex Park, Chimney Gulch and Windy Saddle are popular bike routes, boasting several hairpin turns on both Mount Zion and Lookout Mountain. Hang Gliding is another popular activity on Lookout Mountain. The updrafts and air currents on the east side of the mountain make for nearly ideal conditions for hang gliding.
