Boulder History

Boulder is situated in a valley beneath Flagstaff Mountain where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains. The Flatirons, one of Boulders most recognizable landmarks, are located just west of the city. Boulder and the surrounding area are known for having over 300 days of sunshine annually. The mountains to the west shield and protect Boulder from the most severe storms. Boulder boasts a mild climate with dry moderate summers and relatively mild winters, although large amounts of snow can fall from time to time.

The Arapaho, Cheyenne, Ute, Comanche, and Sioux Native American tribes first settled the area. It wasn't until 1858 when the first European settlers came to the area in search of gold. The city of Boulder was officially incorporated in 1871.
